Happy weekend!!
What a nice holiday treat on this c-c-c-c-cold, icy morning! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through each link. Thank you for sharing such an eclectic and interesting collection. There are so many titles I love on that booklist. Just two days ago a college friend and I were funtasizing about moving to a small town we both love and opening a children’s bookstore together. The article about friendship was so good. A friendship that meant the world to me changed forever when I expressed doubts about her choice of whom to marry. 32 years later, they are still married, and we are still in touch, and perhaps it was geographical distance that is primarily to blame for the now very-limited role we play in each other’s lives, but I trace it to a conversation all in her close circle urged me to have. I will always regret that I did–but also: I think it may be that we would have drifted anyway. I suspect my mis-step was about no longer knowing her as I thought I did. I think there is no one right answer to the question because it depends upon the particulars of the friendship and the people involved. And I really, really loved the piece on practice. It crystallizes some wonderings I’ve had about how and why I skate, and validates the reluctance I’ve felt to commit to skill testing and my complete revulsion at the idea of competition.
So many other links were just so much fun. The quiz at the end got me completely wrong, until I took it again and changed the answers of the two I wavered on. Then it got me completely right. I always love the beautiful things you find that others make. I want to find more time in the coming year to make beautiful things. Not to make beautiful things, but because that is a by-product of a practice that I find compelling. I am always astonished at people who make amazing things that others would find idiosyncratic or frivolous or not worthy of much time (embroidered moths, ceramic ghosts); you know that has to come from following a fascination and working through many iterations that were not as fabulous as the ones we now see. I want to give myself permission to do more of that.
Also: I also love those shoes. And I would not pull the trigger for me (I sometimes love things just for themselves, even though they are not right for me), but I’m rooting for you to pull it for you. Because everyone should have at least one pair of fabulous shoes.
We’re sooooo cold here too!! If we make it above zero, I’ll be shocked!
And maybe I will pull the trigger on those shoes – I think I want to set a goal and use them as a reward if I meet it! Now I just need to figure out the goal!
I love all your thoughts about practice – both in skating and making beautiful things. I like the idea of incorporating a more growth mindset/practice in all avenues of my life lately.
So. Many. Things. It reminds me how much I’ve missed these posts.
I really like the alternatives to “how are you?”
I’ve never seen a shrimp tree, and I feel cheated.
One year, I spliced a picture of Anna and I and it was so cool. Our faces were perfectly balanced. ❤️
I only discovered the website SwissMiss last month. What a great find.
The satisfaction of practice…YES.
Have a wonderful holiday, Katie! 😘
I love a shrimp tree!! Highly recommend one!
And thank you for the holiday wishes! Hope you have a wonderful one as well!
I’m late to commenting here, but Happy New Year! Thanks for the link to what to watch on HULU, we just added it to our TV.
I took the quiz and either I don’t know myself or it is wrong. It said I’m the “Explorer type – Exciting, spontaneous, and self-reliant, you are most likely an explorer type! (ISTP, ISFP, ESTP, ESFP).” I am an INFP. I don’t do any of that “S” stuff ever.
