Lining Drawers

In my opinion, unless you are moving into a brand new home, contact paper is a must and even then, it’s a pretty handy dandy product. It’s certainly easier to replace than a laminate shelf covered in spilled nail polish or a drawer that warps when a damp loofah gets tossed in by mistake. (I speak from experience)

When we first moved in, I managed to get most of the kitchen and all of the master bath lined but having a “little helper” at home without a big sister to occupy him meant the most important supply in contact paper placement was missing. (I’ll get to supplies in a moment.) With it being summer vacation, I decided to risk it, handed them a new box of Legos, and headed upstairs to take the Lord’s name in vain.

Lest that last comment deter you, putting in contact paper is not at all complicated. All you need is contact paper, scissors, a box cutter, and the patience to get it to lie flat where you want it. (That’s the clincher). Some people like to measure it out exactly before they wrestle with it and if that’s you, you’ll want a ruler instead of a box cutter.

I’ve done it both ways and I don’t think measuring it makes it any easier, so I just eyeball using the grids on the back (erring on the side of too big). When it comes to paper, I’m brand loyal and I only get the smooth kind (the textured stuff weirds me out). This is my favorite pattern because it doesn’t show overlap. It was all sold old (must be other people’s favorite as well) so I went with plain white. It does show overlap, but that doesn’t bother my kids. As for the patience, I don’t have it, so I swear a lot. (Sorry, Mom)

I started by clearing out and removing the drawers on one side of the vanity which is pretty painless unless you drop a drawer on your toe – which I did. After I stopped hopping and cursing, I gave everything a good wipe down with some hot soapy water (those drawer rails get really dusty) and then dried everything off really well. Once that was over, I rolled out the paper making a quick snip at the gridline that was just past the measurement of the drawer, set the drawer aside, and cut out my paper.

Then the cursing recommenced. This is my least favorite part of contact paper. You peel off the back, get it in position, and affix it to the surface hoping it doesn’t shift too much – smoothing out the bubbles as you go. I typically start at one corner and work in a diagonal – lifting/reattaching if it bubbles up. Sometimes I can get into a rhythm and it goes pretty quickly but most of the time, that isn’t my luck. Deep breaths and taking my time are about the only tricks I know for this part.

Because I use the gridlines on the back, I usually have some extra paper that goes up along the sides of the drawer. I just use my box cutter to go around the bottom and then gently peel the edges up from the side taking extra care at the corners because they don’t like to peel off as easily.

(When you don’t take care at the corners you end up with corners that are kind of torn like mine above – again, kids’ bathroom). Then you get to put your finished (pretty) drawers back in and start over on the other side.

Once I finished the drawers, I thought about doing underneath the sink but decided to save hitting my head on plumbing for another day and joined my children (now with Legos everywhere and playing princess candyland) instead.

This Moment

I hold my breath and wait for the other shoe to drop, create disaster scenarios in my head to serve as warm up to the inevitable someday pain, develop safety preparedness plans for storms, intruders, plague. I say prayers at night before bed, in the morning when I wake, at intermittent intervals throughout my day. Keep us safe. Keep us safe. Keep us safe.

It’s so unbelievably good. Warmth, full bellies, the occasional vacation. Listening to V read or A sing. My husband walking by with a kiss and a pat. All four of us snuggled together on a Sunday morning – tickles and laughter under cool sheets. I remind Him that He never gives us more than we can handle, and I break easily.

“It could all come crashing down.”

“These things happen.”

“What if…”

I slip on my shoes. Lace up. Match my footfalls to the listing of calamities in my head. My brain replaces one list with another as I settle into a rhythm. Two breaths in. Two out. Run from your center. Light feet. Relaxed shoulders. Long spine. Mula Bandha. Soft face.

My doxology could go on for miles. Thank you for this step. This leg that healed. The sun that rose. The breeze. The husband getting ready for work. The kids eating breakfast and bickering as siblings should. The fog around the edges that doesn’t take hold the way it once did. The friends who bring stories and encouragement and coffee. The gentle and quiet click of knitting needles and warm dog on my toes. Thank you for this moment. This moment. This moment.

My body runs out before my thankfulness does. I am covered in sweat that has no where to go – the air already filled with damp. I use my opposite foot to pull off my shoes, pour myself a glass of water, chug. Again. Head upstairs while my thighs pop from exertion. I stand under cool water. I towel off. I get dressed. I look at my list thinking only of what there is to do. Laundry, dishes, dusting, weeding. The day to day business of living.

Thank you for this moment.

Hello

Hello, summer. I’m so glad you could join us in time for the fourth.

Grandpa added a slide to the dock years ago. The kiddos love it. I love watching them play on it.

Love his face. Can’t get over the fact that he’s FOUR. Hello, Molly butt.

Hello over-exposed picture that I love. Absolutely LOVE. I’m learning that even mistakes can lead to treasured pictures.

Speaking of things I can’t get over, she’ll be turning six next week.

Hello, happy little boat. Summer weekends wouldn’t be the same without you.

Hello, Friday night/Saturday movie marathon while I worked on my blanket. Watched Out of Africa, Gone with the Wind, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and on a recommendation from Jules North and South (BBC miniseries). All of them were wonderful. Though I needed Kleenex for every one except Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

This week, V will be taking part in a few fun summer classes, I’ll be cleaning and working on some house projects (I’ve got to get the contact paper finished), and planning for a few family adventures we have coming up.

What are you saying hello to this week?

Currently

Currently reading:: A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans as part of a book discussion. I guess it stirred up quite a bit of controversy with more complementarian circles, but I personally find it fascinating. Some of the things she decided to do (camping in her front yard during her period, sitting on the roof of her house for being “contentious”) seem a little silly to prove a point, but I admire how she decided to take on this challenge. I especially like her discussion on social justice when it comes to consumerism. I think that is probably the largest takeaway for me. I have about 1/4 left to go and then I’m going to read something a little more light.

Currently watching:: We got rid of cable for the summer to see if we could cut the cord for good. We did keep our Netflix subscription so I’ve been watching Arrested Development and the seasons of The Big Bang Theory that we’ve purchased through iTunes. I was unimpressed with this season of Mad Men but thought the last episode was great.

Current healthy living goal:: For the next year, most of my goals will probably have to do with weight loss/health. I’ve been using my UP for the last week and I have to say I really like it. I have a few friends that have one. The software allows you to create a “team” which is really helpful for accountability and motivation. The sleep tracking and alarm that you can set to remind you to move are pretty great features as well. For the next month my goal is to log 15,000 steps a day and journal every bite.

Currently eating:: This chicken and roasted potato wedges recipe from Iowa Girl Eats is one of my new favorites and I can’t wait to try these Fresh Fruit Frozen Yogurt Pops from Meet the Dubiens (love her new blog design).

Currently listening:: One of my friends recommended the band City and Colour and I’ve been playing them a lot lately while around the house. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s The Heist and Brand New have been on the iPod lately. Great running music.

Current blog loves:: I don’t how in the world I’ve missed Jen Loves Kev for so long but I just can’t get over all the cuteness. So glad I found them. One of my friends just emailed me about The Handmade Home. Great ideas for our new home!! I love this pallet table my friend Laura made. I might have to see if I can get an old pallet from Jesse’s work and make one of my own. And this post from Jessi just grabbed my heart and squeezed.

Currently knitting:: The same blanket I’ve been working on for weeks. I love doing blankets because once you get the pattern down it’s pretty easy to just sit down and work on it whenever. I hate them because they take forever. I’m using a kit and pattern from HPKY that I found at my favorite knit shop. Next up will be some new baby things (no I’m not pregnant) – baby knits are my favorite.

Currently loving:: My babes who aren’t so much babes any more. I was so terrified that summer vacation was just going to beat me down. We have moments where we are all bristling but we have more where I watch my children showing each other grace and saying things like “We do love and sharing is love. Here, you can have the last one.” and I think maybe (just maybe) they’re going to turn out okay despite me.

What’s currently going on in your life?

Little Miss

She’ll be six in a blink. A first grader in the fall. She’s mastered the backhanded compliment. Yesterday I called an end to pool time: A declared me to be the worst. V, on the other hand said, “I don’t think you’re the worst, though you are really mean sometimes.”

She loves to play outdoors. Climb trees. Ride bike. Put her near water – she’ll swim in it. No height is too high, no water too deep, no challenge too intimidating. I have to keep an extra close eye on her simply because she has no lack of confidence in her abilities. She’s assured and fearless in a way the leaves me breathless.

We are currently reading Charlotte’s Web. I’m nervous about how she’ll react to the end but she wants to watch the movie and I told her we had to read the book first. I tend to worry about her for no reason. I love when she asks me to read to her. Or pretends to read. Or shows me what she can read. Those little light switches are just flipping on in a hurry.

She’s tough. She’s tenderhearted. Her love of dresses knows no bounds. She adores her father in a way that makes my heart melt and occassionally roll my eyes (particularly when she follows the above backhanded compliment with “Dad’s not ever mean”).

I have no idea how I am responsible for birthing this beautiful soul into the world, but I thank God that he gave me her. Getting to mother her is one of my biggest blessings.
